On Monday, November 10th Village Care of New York celebrated the 10th Anniversary of Legends of the Village benefiting SeniorChoices. Over 250 supporters gathered together for an evening of dinner and dancing at New York University’s Kimmel Center overlooking the Manhattan skyline.
The highlight of the evening was the awards ceremony honoring distinguished members of the community. Receiving the Lenore Zola Award for commitment to Village Care was former Chairman of the Board and Acting Director of Village Nurisng Home, Samuel Burneson. Broadway legend, Phyllis Newman, received the William F. Passannante Award for contributions to the world of entertainment presented by community leader Maria Passannante Derr in conjunction with performer and last year’s recipient, Daphne Rubin-Vega. Also honored were entrepreneurs and community activists Jimmy and Rocío Sanz who received the Village Business Legend Award.
The annual gala also features the release of Village Care’s annual Legends of the Village Calendar, which features individuals - the well known and those who have made contributions to society out of the spotlight - with a connection to Greenwich Village and its spirit of creativity and service. Among the calendar “legends” who attended this year’s event were Sheila Rule, Lilly Rivlin, Lucy Cecere and Florent Morellet. Other notable attendants include Senator Tom Duane, Assemblymember Deborah Glick and Brad Hoylman of Community Board 2.
